Tyree, of Campbell CountyNew Kent County records are rare. The court house and all its records were destroyed in the mid-1800's. Random bits of land-transfer information and church records have survived, but provide no clear path to RICHARD'S ancestors. The TYREE or TYRE name can be found in New Kent County as far back as the mid-1600's. It can be followed back to Scotland, to the town of Drumkilbo, in the 1500's. Several branches of the TYREE family, in North Carolina, West Virginia, and Kentucky, all trace their ancestry back to New Kent County. None, however, can provide the linking "name" to their, or our branch of the family. We must then begin any definitive collection of descendants with RICHARD, and his brothers. THE HALF-BROTHERS: First married in Campbell County was RICHMOND TYREE. He married POLLY ANDERSON on January 13, 1806. POLLY was the daughter of William Anderson. Local rumor is that they moved "west". PLEASANT TYREE married MATILDA ANDERSON on August 30, 1810. A "Pleasant and Matilda Tyree" appear in Tennessee records in August 1818. Records show that SAMUEL TYREE married JUDITH STANTON in 1811, and that a SAMUEL TYREE served in the "Lynchburg Rifles" during the War of 1812. A SAMUEL C. TYREE marries an ANDERSON in 1816..... There is a record of a MARY TYREE, sister of RICHARD TYREE, who marries a MR. SCLOTER in the early 1800's, but there are no connecting details, at this time. RICHARD TYREE AND DESCENDANTS: Census records indicate that RICHARD TYREE was born about 1779, in New Kent County, Virginia. He died on November 19, 1852 in Lynchburg, Va. He married MILDRED YOUNG DOUGLAS on December 31, 1805, in Campbell County. She was the daughter of a prominent Quaker family, Achillis Moorman Douglas and Elizabeth Terrell Douglas, and must have caused quite a stir when she married "out of the faith"! MILDRED was born on August 18, 1785 in Campbell County and died on July 27, 1857, at TYREEANNA, the family home, southeast of Lynchburg. RICHARD worked as an inspector of tobbacco at Liberty Warehouse in Lynchburg in 1811 - 1813. He passed the profession on to at least two generations of his descendants. In the 1850 census, RICHARD is listed as a commercial merchant, with more than $20,000.00 in property. A more detailed search of early Lynchburg Newspapers accounts may develop more information, including the connecting link to New Kent County. RICHARD and MILDRED had at least 11 children. TY-1.
