Allied Families

Stringfield, of the Coastal Carolinas

We are looking for connections between this STRINGFIELD group, and the families of Richard Stringfield and Ezekiel Stringfield, that are found in northeast Tennessee and western North Carolina; the family of James Jefferson Stringfield, that is found in centeral and southern Tennessee. I've seen turn-of-the-century photographs of members of the W.W.Stringfield family, from Ashville, N.C., and there is little doubt that they are related to my grandfather, a descendant of James Jefferson Stringfield -- the problem is figuring out exactly where !!

Stringfield Immigration Map

Our first documentation on the family is the will of Richard Stringfield, that was filed in Northampton Co., N.C. in 1747. From that point, there are at least two separate groups: one that goes west to Rutheford County; and another that goes south to New Hanover County, and on into South Carolina and Georgia.

This page will follow this second group.

Eastern N.C. Stringfields

H.C.Stringfield, about 1874

The primary source for this genealogy is a 53-page booklet printed in 1912 and sold for $1.00 by Henry Calhoun Stringfield, called "The Stringfield Boys of New Hanover County, North Carolina", which detailed his life and the life of his extended family.
Stringfields in New Hanover County, N.C.

H.C. (as he called himself) described, in narrative form, his memories and what he was told by relatives. He describes the family life in the mid-1800's along the Black River, 40 miles north of Wilmington in New Hanover County (now Pender County), N.C. The "genealogy" was extracted by reading the entire booklet, and then diagraming out the actual family relationships, using the dates that H.C. supplies.

Cross-referencing H.C.'s details with available civil records, provides more detail and expanded relationships. It generally confirms his dates of when things occurred, but it points out that he was sometimes wrong about where the events occurred.
Stringfields in South Carolina and Georgia

The most interesting difference I've noted is the disparity between H.C.'s description of the family settling in New Hanover County after the Revolutionary War, and descendants moving from there to the south, and the civil record. The Census record indicates NO Stringfield family in either coastal area before 1820, when they simultaneously appear in South Carolina, in Barnwell and Edgefield Counties, and in North Carolina, in New Hanover and Hertford Counties !! It is interesting to note that there are three Fellows families listed in that general area, in the 1790 census. . . . . so there may be some truth to the stories that defies the civil records.
H.C.Stringfield, about 1912The following is H.C.Stringfield's description of his ancestry. The words and punctuation are his; the bold names are mine:

I remember my Grandfather told me that his Father was a Virginian, of Dutch descent, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. After the war, married a Miss Fellows in Duplin County North Carolina, settled there, raised six children: John, the eldest moved to Alabama; William, to Augusta, Georgia; Elisha didn't know where; Edward and his sister Rachael, to Barnwell County South Carolina. She married a Youngblood. My grandfather Joseph Stringfield, the youngest of the family, stayed home and married a Miss Powell, died at the place he first settled at the age of eighty-six, forty-three miles north of Wilmington, New Hanover County on Black River, North Carolina.

My father Peyton Randolph Stringfield was the first child born to Grand-papa Joseph. I have forgotten the month but the year 1807. My mother was a Miss Jones, born twenty miles above Wilmington, the youngest child in the family born in 1810. All mothers family except one brother died before I was born. Papa P.R. and mother Susan Jane, had thirteen children, I am the sixth. The two first died before I was born. I, Charles Henry Calhoun Stringfield, so recorded in the old Bible was born April 9th, 1841. When I grew up I left off the Charles, for no reason that I know of unless it was so long.
