Ezekiel Stringfield
of North Carolina and TennesseeFrom the Bible that has been passed down to his descendants, we know that Ezekiel Stringfield was born on September 26, 1762, and that he married Rebecca Sorrels on November 5, 1785. Rebecca was born on April 28, 1768, and since they (Ezekiel and Rebecca) show up in the 1790 census in North Carolina, we assume that they were both born and married in that state. We are also investigating the possibility that Ezekiel is a son of Joseph Stringfield of New Hannover County, N.C., who has been identified only as an untraced "Elisha" in the family stories of Henry Calhoon Stringfield, in his 1912 booklet, "The Stringfield Boys".
We know that Rebecca shows up in Knox County, Tennessee as the head of household in 1807, so we must assume the Ezekiel has died by that time. The children and grandchildren show up, in later census lists, in Knox and Morgan Counties. Their Bible lists at least 12 other individuals. We believe that 5 of these are their children, and that the others are grandchildren -- but there are few specific records to confirm these assumptions. The assumed family structure is shown below.
