ROBERT LAWRENCE, son of Sir John Lawrence, merchant of London, appears to be the first of his family in Virginia. He obtained a patent for 100 acres of land on Lawne's Creek, Isle Of Wight County, and another one for 200 acres "adjacent to the widow Bennet and Mr Hardy" on August 25,1642. When the first U.S. census was taken in 1790, the family of our great-great-grandfather, Michael Lawrence, was the only family of Lawrences living in Gates County. They lived in the Wiggins Hill community on the farm now owned by W.H.(Billie) Lawrence. Michael Lawrence's house disappeared many years ago, but I have been told that it was a log house. Our Grandfather, Marmaduke Lawrence, was born there, and so were 9 of his 10 children. He bought the adjoining property in 1859, and moved there shortly before Charles Marmaduke Lawrence, was born.
