Colleton, of Barbados and South Carolina
COLLETON, John, Lord Proprietor of Carolina. John- B:1608; D:1666. Lived in Barbados during the Cromwell years. When he died, his sons were, sequentially, Lords Proprietors, as his heirs. (1)Peter – no information; (2) Thomas Colleton – lived in Barbados and never visited S.C.; (3) James Colleton – lived in Barbados, but often visited Carolina. In 1686 James is commissioned Governor of Colony, but has stormy administration. In 1690, local parliament, with acting Governor Seth Sothell, banished James from Colony, and he retierd to Barbados, dying there in 1706. |
