Burton, of Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky We believe that RUFUS, identified as William Rufus and as Rufus Golliher, is the son of Dempsey Burton, of eastern Tennessee, and the Grandson of Hillary Burton, who lived in Tennessee and Kentucky, but have only circumstantial support. We know that Rufus married first in Morgan Co. Tennessee, and married for a second time in or around Bluefield, Virginia or West Virginia -- it is a border town. He married Sarah Cromwell Robinson, the former wife of William E. Robinson, (he was alive and re married in 1915, so we assume that they divorced), both of which were born and married in Morgan Co. Tennessee. At this time, it appears that they both went to Virginia / West Virginia separately, and married there, and that Rufus and Sarah lived variously in Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky, as their children are listed in census records as being born in these states. Rufus worked for the railroad, as did several of his sons. 1. RUFUS GOLLIHER1 BURTON was born March 1858 in Tennessee, and died 1936 in Bluefield, Virginia. He married (1) SARAH HALL October 14, 1875 in Morgan Co., Tennessee. He married (2) SARAH JANE CROMWELL Abt. 1891, daughter of ANDREW CROMWELL and MOURNING MCCOY. She was born April 15, 1865 in Tennessee, and died June 08, 1958 in Bluefield, West Virginia. Children of RUFUS BURTON and SARAH HALL are: i. EMILY LUCINDA2 BURTON, b. December 1876. ii. BERTIE L. BURTON, b. October 1882; m. JESSE M. GILPIN, September 27, 1906; b. 1888. iii. MARY ELLEN BURTON, b. October 1884. iv. JOHN BURTON, b. March 1887. Children of RUFUS BURTON and SARAH CROMWELL are: v. RUFUS GOLLIHER2 BURTON, JR., b. 1893. vi. BERTHA BURTON, b. June 1894; m. ARTHUR PORTERFIELD, October 29, 1913; b. 1882. vii. WILLIAM A. BURTON, b. April 08, 1897, West Virginia; d. April 01, 1967, Johnson City, Tennessee. viii. LULA BURTON, b. August 1899. ix. SHERMAN DEWEY BURTON, b. July 03, 1900, West Virginia; d. June 16, 1970, Narrows, Virginia. 2. x. ZENITH BURTON, b. April 15, 1904, Tazwell Co. Virginia; d. April 30, 1928, Bluefield, Va..   Generation No. 2 2. ZENITH2 BURTON (RUFUS GOLLIHER1) was born April 15, 1904 in Tazwell Co. Virginia, and died April 30, 1928 in Bluefield, Va.. She married LEAMON MONROE STRINGFIELD Abt. 1921, son of JAMES STRINGFIELD and JULIA CROMWELL. He was born February 18, 1903 in Wartburg, Morgan County, Tennessee, and died March 07, 1967 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Leamon and Zena were cousins, through their mother's families. See CROMWELL for more detail. Very little is know about ZENA BURTON. K.Stringfield (Zena's only living child) knew little of her mother. We don't know for sure where she is buried, and it took extensive research to find a death certificate for her or her first child. K. S. knew her grandparents as RUFUS and SARA Burton, but the death certificate says that Zena's parents were " J.R. and Mary Wusweller Burton". K.S. was raised through her early teens by her aunt and uncle Andy P. and "Ma" Burton. Leamon re-married in southern Tennesse, and started a second family. K.Stringfield went to live with her father at about the age of 17.
