| .The re-construction related here, comes from my analysis of the genealogy described by Oliver in his "History", tempered by the details in the documents he supplies in the text of three pages, specifically Volume I, pages 69-71, and other tid-bits in other family groups, where some of Oliver's assumptions seem to be contradicted. Additional information has been gleaned from early South Carolina records. Generic comments: Oliver indicates that the family land, "Boons", was a very small estate in St.John's Parish. In 1852, it contained 85 acres and was owned by J. Tollemache, Esq. A map included in the "History" indicates that it would have been near what is now know as Boon Point on the north coast of the island. Various maps also list the bay east of that point as Boon's Bay.
- There is an additional entry at the bottom of page 69 that indicates that a William Boone, "born in Antigua", lived on Tortola (now the British Virgin Islands) in the census of 11/22/1717, with 1 white woman and 15 negroes. Quaker records there don't begin until 1740, and no one named "Boone" is listed in those, or any other records I've located for Tortola.
Samuel Boone is the first individual that we can tie to additional family members. There are a number of specific references to a William Boone, Quaker, his "wife and children" (never named), and his continuing conflict with the government between 1676 - 1685 for refusing to take part in militia activities. The first "linking" document is a will for Samuel Boone, written on July 8, 1716, and apparently submitted to court on July 23, 1716. The following is a reconstruction of the family: William Boone:
- Would appear to be born before 1654, if he owns land in 1672.
- "William Boone, planter" leases 10 acres of land from Ralph Hoskins on 11/18/1672
- William Boone, a Quaker, is committed to prison by Maj.Mallet on 10/23/1676
- William Boone buys 20 acres of land from Walter Burke, planter, on 5/20/1678
- William Boone appears in the 1678 census in the Popes Head Division of St.John, as having 4 white men, 2 white women, three white children, and 1 negro in his household.
- "William Boone" also appears in the Dixon's Bay Division of St.John in the 1678 census, with 2 white men, 2 white women, 1 negro man, 2 negro women, and 1 negro child. Its not clear if this is the same individual, or the son "William" brother to Samuel in the will of 1716.
- William Boone is "sent to the fort" for not appearing in arms in 1684.
- William Boone is fined and again in prison for 40 days by 2/24/1685, for the failure to appear in arms.
From Oliver's genealogy it would appear the Samuel Boone and William Boone are sons of the William Boone described above. The census would indicate that there were other siblings, but none are mentioned by name in Samuels's will. These un-named individuals may be part of the confusion in the genealogy. As Oliver tries to place everyone "named" in the church records into a specific structure, he may well be forcing names and dates together, that didn't actually occur. Samuel Boone: - Is born prior to 1678, as he is married and has a daughter in 1700, when the three are all baptized in the Church. (Parish Register of St.John's)
- Samuel Boone and John Hodge are listed, in 7/31/1707, as "persons on whom soldiers are intended to be billeted".
- Samuel Boone and Henry Hodge are each identified as "an orderly man" in the muster list for the Corps of Carbineers on 6/12/1708.
- A James Boone marries a Margaret Hodge in St.John's on 10/4/1724.
- Samuel's family (based on 1716 will) includes:
- A wife named Lucie, who is alive in 1700, but not mentioned in the will of 1716.
- A son William, born prior to 1698, who is not on Antigua when his father dies in 1716, and who receives the remainder of his father's estate not specifically given to siblings.
- A daughter, Mary, baptized in 1700, who is married to Edmond Devereux by 1716, and must live on Antigua, as Edmond is listed as a temporary guardian for the children, in the will, until Samuel's son, William can return to Antigua.
- A son, Jones, born after 1698, as he is not 18 years old at his father's death.
- A son, John, born after 1698, as he is not 18 years old at his father's death.
- A son, Joseph, born after 1698, as he is not 18 years old at his father's death.
- A son, Edward, born after 1698, as he is not 18 years old at his father's death.
- A son, James, born after 1698, as he is not 18 years old at his father's death.
- A son, Samuel, born after 1698, as he is not 18 years old at his father's death.
- Samuel Boone apparently writes his will on 7/8/1716, and dies before 7/23/1716, leaving each son, except William, "100 Pounds cash and a negro, when they reach 18 years". Mary receives hers, directly, in his will. William is willed "the residue" of Samuel's estate, and is named executor of his father's will.
Now, here is where I begin to differ with Oliver's interpretation of the Church records. He indicates that William, son of Samuel is married in 1709, and has 3 children; then marries again in 1718 (5 months prior to the birth of his third child, by his first wife !) I believe that the first marriage is actually William, the brother of Samuel, maybe another relative, but NOT the son ! There is another William Boone mentioned in Church data, wife named Elizabeth, who have a daughter baptized in 1722. These ambiguities make it impossible to really know which "William" is which, unless the wife or child's name is directly included in the Church record. Oliver seems to make that leap of faith, without the specific written data to support it.William Boone:
- Marries Mary Ronen on 2/12/1709 in St John's Parish. They appear to have three children.
- Anne Boone, baptized at St.Johns on 4/8/1716.
- Elizabeth Boone, baptized at St.John's on 11/13/1717
- Thomas Boone, baptized at St.John's on 10/27/1719
Oliver indicates that the second wife of his William, son of Samuel, marries Jane Wilkinson, daughter of John Wilkinson, mariner. I believe that this is the first, essentially the only wife of William, son of Samuel. I know from Carolina records that William Boone and Jane Wilkinson Boone live in Carolina by 1752, and die there between 1770 and 1778. The following is constructed from Oliver's data and Carolina records.William Boone, son of Samuel:
- We assume he was born prior to 1698, as he was over 18 at his father's will, in 1716.
- Marries Jane Wilkinson, daughter of John Wilkinson, mariner (who has two other daughters) in St.Johns on 5/22/1718.
- Their children, listed in St.John's Church Records, include:
- A daughter, Lucey, baptized on 5/24/1719.
- A daughter, Ann, baptized on 5/27/1721.
- A daughter, Mary, baptized on 7/30/1724
- A daughter, Jane, baptized on 12/14/1728. There is a reference in Carolina records to Jane, unmarried daughter of William Boone, who dies at Stono Plantation, the home of Joseph Farr, Esq., on 5/23/1792. St.John's church data indicate that a "Jane, daughter of William" (no wife's name) is buried in 1731. So, either the St.John's data is describing two different daughters named "Jane", or William and Jane Wilkinson Boone have another daughter named Jane after 1741, who is not mentioned in St.John's records.
- A daughter, Rebecka, baptized on 10/13/1733 in St.John's, Antigua. She marries (1st)11/1752, Capt. John Lloyd, commander of Fort Johnson, on John's Island, at the entrance to Charleston, S.C. They have a daughter, Rebecca Lloyd. Rebecka Boone Lloyd marries (2nd) date unknown, Col. Robert Rivers, and has a son named Charles Rivers.
- A son, Samuel, baptized on 12/15/1735
- A daughter, Susannah, baptized on 4/6/1737
- A son, Edward, baptized on 9/28/1739. "Edward ye son of William" is buried on 9/29/1739. We assume that they are the same individual.
- A son, James, baptized on 5/4/1741
- Jane Wilkinson Boone dies in South Carolina on 11/13/1770, her husband William still lives on John's Island (also know as Boon's Island in a 1696 map of the area), at the entrance to Charleston harbor.
- William Boone dies on 5/7/1778. He would have been about 80 years old.
The remainder of Oliver's BOONE GENEALOGY:This is the remainder of Oliver's construction of the Boone Family, most of which has single-element support in the Church data, but not conclusive data, to the standards that we strive for. The Descendant of Samuel Boone:
- A son William, described in detail above.
- A daughter, Mary, baptized in 1700, who is married to Edmond Devereux by 1716, and must live on Antigua, as Edmond is listed as a temporary guardian for the children, in the will, until Samuel's son, William can return to Antigua.
- A son, Jones, no additional data is available.
- A son, John, born after 1698, marries Elizabeth (no date or last name in St.John's data) There are two children, perhaps of this couple, mentioned in the data.
- A son "of John and Elizabeth", Samuel, is baptized on 1/23/1734.
- A daughter "of John and Elizabeth", Christian, is baptized on 7/28/1734. A daughter "of John" is buried on 7/30/1734. There is too little time for these to represent the birthdates of two children in the same family, so either baptismal dates are not near birthdates, or we have two different couples named John and Elizabeth !
- A son, Joseph, born after 1698, appears to marry Rachael Soanes on 3/11/1733. They have:
- A daughter, Margaret, baptized on 10/12/1735.
- A son, Edward, baptized on 4/19/1741. He might be the "Edward, a child" buried on 8/6/1741, without reference to his parents.
- A daughter, Mary, baptized on 3/27/1742-3.
- A son, Edward, born after 1698, no additional data available.
- A son, James, born after 1698, and appears to marry Margaret Hodge on 10/4/1724. Samuel Boone is mentioned with two different men named Hodge, perhaps neighbors. James and Margaret appear to have:
- A daughter, Jane, baptized on 2/19/1726.
- A daughter, Mary, baptized on 3/2/1728-9. ** two different "Mary, dau. of James" are in burial records; one in 1734 and another in 1737. No clarity as to who it is.
- A daughter, Margaret, baptized on 8/18/1736.
- A son, Samuel, born after 1698. There is no marriage record for a "Samuel Boone" in St.John's records, but a couple, Samuel and Sarah, have at least two children. A "Mr Samuel Boone" is buried on 6/26/1728.
- A son "of Samuel and ???", Jones, baptized on 7/30/1724.
- A son, Samuel, baptized on 6/21/1726.
- A daughter, Lucey, baptized on 8/11/1727.
Random Connections:
- Lucey, daughter of William and Jane, might be the same Lucey Boone that marries John Hanson 3/11/1733. She would be only 12-13 years old, but no other "Lucey" is identified in Church data. In any case, the following Hanson data applies to some Lucey Boone! John Hanson is baptized on 12/27/1712, and marries Lucey Boone on 3/11/1733. They have:
- A daughter, Jane, baptized on 10/22/1734.
- A son, John, baptized on 1/6/1735.
- A daughter, Margaret, baptized on 4/6/1737, and buried on 4/15/1740.
- A son, William Boone Hanson, baptized on 10/21/1739, buried on 4/23/1740. (what happened in 1740 ?)
- A daughter, Sarah Baker Hanson, baptized on 11/30/1740.
- A son, James, baptized on 5/30/1742.
- John Wilkinson, mariner, had three daughters identified in Oliver's "History".
- Mary Wilkinson, who marries Josiah Newfiele about 1719.
- Elizabeth Wilkinson, who marries Thomas Hanson.
- Jane Wilkinson, who marries William Boone on 5/22/1718.
