BLAKE, Benjamin, arrived in 1683 with several other "dissenter" families, seeking the religeous freedom promised by the Carolina Charter. The family is believed to be from Bridgewater, Somersetshire

BLAKE, Joseph, son of Benjamin, married Deborah Morton, daughter of Governor Morton, prior to 1685. Deborah dies, and Joseph married Elizabeth Axtell, daughter of Landgrave Daniel Axtell. They had a son, also named Joseph Blake. Joseph Blake died in 1700.

Joseph Blake owned a plantation called "Plainsfield" on the Stono River, near "new cut".
