We've researched the Bacon Genealogy and the Rebellion led by Nathaniel Bacon searching for links to Nicholas and Thomas Boone, who are supposed to be residents of Virginia at the time. They leave only sporatic record of their existenance, but some of those records are specifically related to the taking of "an Oath", and being a defendant in a court case, all in the 1676 - 1677 timeframe. There is also an indication that a Thomas Boone got a grant for 640 acres of land, later sold by a descendant, in an area adjacent to the Roanoke River, in southeastern North Carolina. There are sporatic records of Nicholas and Thomas Boone in Philadelphia and Boston, in roughly the same time period -- perhaps totally different families, but perhaps separate "sightings" of the same individuals !! The Bacon family also has known ties to Boston. The Bacon family has money and power, both of which would have been needed to acquire a patent for 640 acres of land in 1668. The families may have known each other, or been neighbors in England, and the only way to prove or dis-prove it, is to research it ! There are no firm connections, but here is the data.

He studied at Cambridge, and at Grey's Inn. He had a tutor named John Ray, who also guided some of his travel through Europe when he was "asked" to leave Cambridge. He is said to have been a lawyer in Virginia. The marriage to Elizabeth Duke so upset the community in Suffolk, that his father gave the couple 1800 pounds, English money, and put them on a tobacco ship for Virginia !! Nathaniel used the money to buy 1200 acres of land, along the north shore of the James River in Henrico County, from Thomas Ballard. This home, called "Curle's Neck", was about 20 miles below Richmond, but about 40 miles above Jamestown. He also maintained a residence in Richmond, but lived primarily at the river plantation. It is said that he died of "the bloody flax", a form of the intestinal illness, dysentery, that can also be symptomatic of Malaria. Its thought that he might have contracted Malaria from mosquitoes, during his stay in the swampy areas surrounding Jamestown, during the summer of 1676. He died at Mr. Pate's house, Glouscester (neat Yorktown), in October 1676. One report say it was October 1st, another says October 26th.. | |
